UK Delays BP’s H2Teesside Hydrogen Plant Amid Land Dispute

The UK government has delayed a decision on BP’s H2Teesside blue hydrogen plant until 30 October 2025, after a land dispute emerged with South Tees Group (STG).

STG claims ownership of the same site BP has earmarked, with plans for a large-scale AI data centre already approved by Redcar and Cleveland Council. Both projects are being positioned as nationally significant—BP’s hydrogen facility could supply over 10% of the UK’s 1GW hydrogen production target by 2030, while STG argues its data hub is the anchor for the government’s new AI growth zone.


Land at the Centre of the Dispute

The contested site lies within Teesworks, the redevelopment of the former Redcar steelworks. Once public-private, the project is now 90% privately owned. STG insists it holds the deeds and already secured outline permission for its data centre earlier in 2025—forcing ministers to pause BP’s Development Consent Order (DCO) while they weigh competing priorities.


Competing Visions for Teesside
