The UK has secured a landmark £7.5 billion ($10 billion) investment agreement with Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, aimed at accelerating the country’s clean energy transition. Over the next decade, the funding will support major infrastructure projects in offshore wind, hydrogen, and power grid development.
Announced by Investment Minister Poppy Gustafsson during her trade visit to Japan, the deal strengthens the UK’s position as a global hub for green innovation and international collaboration.
“Sumitomo has long been a trusted investor in UK energy,” Gustafsson said. “This agreement significantly raises our joint ambition in key sectors like offshore wind and power networks. They’ve been instrumental in helping to ease supply chain constraints — this capital is being deployed into real projects, delivering real impact.”
The investment aligns with the Labour government’s strategy to leverage private sector partnerships in driving sustainable growth and reaching net-zero targets. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made green investment a central pillar of the UK’s economic renewal.
Gustafsson also addressed the increasingly complex global trade landscape, highlighting Britain’s opportunity to act as a stabilising force in global investment discussions. “The value that countries place on trade and long-term partnerships is becoming more important than ever. We see a real role for the UK as a central hub for dialogue and collaboration in a fragmented world.”
This partnership marks another step in the UK’s ongoing effort to position itself at the forefront of the global clean energy revolution.
